SAN FRANCISCO, February 10, 2016 – ascribe GmbH has announced the release of BigchainDB, a scalable blockchain database that can process one million writes per second and their first licensed user, Everledger. BigchainDB achieves one million writes per second with sub-second latency and petabytes of capacity in a federated blockchain database. BigchainDB allows developers and enterprises to deploy blockchain applications and platforms at scale, formerly a limiting factor in getting sandbox proof-of-concepts into production systems.

The throughput capacity of BigchainDB exceeds PayPal by 10,000 times, Visa by 20 times and the peak volume of Nasdaq by 10 times. “The breakthrough was achieved by imbuing the best characteristics of blockchains, immutability and decentralization onto an existing big data distributed database,” said Trent McConaghy, CTO and project lead. “In conversations with the community, the emphasis seemed to be on scaling up blockchains. We came to realize that a distributed database perspective brought a lot to the table, not only for scalability but also for other key database functionality like a flexible query language, efficient querying, and a permissioning system. Our approach was to “blockchain-ify” a scalable distributed database.” BigchainDB is complementary to decentralized processing platforms like Ethereum and file systems like IPFS and fills a clear gap in the decentralized blockchain stack.

The announcement was made in conjunction with CEO Bruce Pon’s presentation at The BlockChain Conference in San Francisco.

Everledger, an immutable ledger for diamond identification and transaction verification, has been named as the first BigchainDB customer. Working to combat fraud and provide provenance in the $80 billion diamond industry, Everledger has built early success with its technology solution embedding one million diamonds on their platform in 2015.

“We had a missing jigsaw piece within our technology stack and this became evident when we road mapped our 2016 objectives,” said Leanne Kemp, CEO and founder of Everledger. “We looked to the market and twisted our minds around different architectures; some proven, and others simply theoretical approaches. It became evident that scaling and deepening our offering across the supply chain with banks and insurers was not possible without this additional layer.”

“It’s a natural fit to work with ascribe, especially given we often shared our challenges and concerns as we were tackling similar problems at scale in parallel universes – digital and physical assets,” added Kemp. “It’s a privilege to work with the entire team at ascribe.”

To date, Everledger has uploaded one million diamond records onto BigchainDB and extended benchmark testing on large data sets resulted in five to seven percent of discoverable fraud with its algorithms. With these results, Everledger moves towards scalable outcomes and commented that they will move from their ‘beta’ platform to full industry release over the coming months. Everledger will also continue to work with Eris and Ethereum.

BigchainDB is designed for use cases requiring high-throughput, lower latency and more storage capacity such as streamlining clearing and settlements in the financial sector, tracking supply chains such as the tracking of diamonds, spare parts or consumer goods, or tracking records of provenance for physical or digital assets.

“Blockchains are going to disrupt enterprises the way that the Internet disrupted global media,” said Pon. “To stay ahead of the curve, hundreds of blockchain experiments are being run by leading enterprises and they’ll all need a secure, scalable blockchain database in production.
BigchainDB is going to be open-sourced to the community so that everyone can use it and build their own applications on top of it.”

The company is currently in talks with several large enterprises to deploy BigchainDB and working with cloud and blockchain platform providers to integrate BigchainDB into their offering. ascribe has also released a first draft of an extensive technical whitepaper, “BigchainDB: A Scalable Blockchain Database.” The living document will incorporate community feedback and can be accessed at www.BigchainDB.com.

Counterfeit goods and ingredient sis a major threat to not just the financial ecosystem, but to the health of consumers around the world. Boston Scientific is the latest company being called out on using counterfeit ingredients, which could severely affect consumer health. If only these companies had used blockchain technology to ensure all of the materials used were genuine, this class action lawsuit would have been prevented.

Boston Scientific And Counterfeit Material

There is no denying the blockchain offers plenty of use cases that will affect the everyday life of both consumers and businesses all over the world. Most consumers think of counterfeit in the form of fake clothing and handbags, which is an equally worrying trend flooding markets all over the world. Counterfeit goods are far worse quality than the real thing, and can harm brand reputation in the long run.

But the biggest culprit in the counterfeit industry can be found in the medical and healthcare sector. Not only is there a vast supply of fake medicine flooding markets in developing countries around the world – with health concerns as a logical consequence – but large manufacturers are using dubious materials in their solutions as well.

Take Boston Scientific, for example, a company well known for manufacturing vaginal mesh implants. Several users have reported miscarriages and various other medical issues as a result of these implants, which has lead to a scrutinizing investigation. Skimping on the materials used in these implants is a big no-no, and rumours are circulating Boston Scientific has been used counterfeit material from China.

With over 70,000 civil lawsuits consolidated into one major federal case, the future’s looking grim for Boston Scientific. If officials can prove counterfeit materials have been used by the company, criminal charges and heftier fines would be on the horizon for the company. Furthermore, the sale of these vaginal mesh implants needs to be halted as soon as possible, until the matter has been resolved.

It may seem all but impossible to prevent counterfeit goods from making their way into the healthcare system, but nothing could be further from the truth. The blockchain is perfectly capable of creating a tool that can be wielded by companies and individuals all over the world to prevent counterfeit goods from entering the market.

Fighting Counterfeit With The Blockchain

Blockchain technology can be adapted to suit various needs, regardless of industry. Battling counterfeit is not an easy task,  which is where the blockchain comes into the picture. This public ledger can be used by manufacturers and vendors to publicly track the origin of good and products used, from the moment it is being manufactured, to when it is in the stores waiting to be sold.

BlockVerify is one the companies working towards achieving that goal, and they have mentioned healthcare as one of the major industries to benefit from the blockchain. Other companies, such as Everledger, are using the same type of technology to remove counterfeit diamonds from circulation one step at a time.
